Le Hong Phong Flashmob

At my high school, it is a tradition for seniors to take part in the flashmob. The dance changes every year and the participants are all from grade 12 ( Senior Year). The flashmob often occurs in the last week of school, before the 12th-graders are off to revise for their University Examinations.

This is this year’s flashmob (I would have been in this if I had stayed at home :D)

And this is the first year’s flashmob. I think this one is the best one so far. You can see the music went off in the middle of the clip because the principal did not allowed them to do it that year. However, it has now became a tradition somehow.

Enjoy!

Summer Fun

Summer is obviously the best time of the year. I am even more excited for the summer as I have not been home for 5 months.

I have started counting down to summer since April and as it gets nearer and nearer, I become kind of crazy.

The things that excite me the most are the beaches. Whenever I come back home, my parents will let me go to the beach. Although they were not long trips because my dad was busy, I still enjoyed it. Honestly, I don’t know how to swim ( I have been trying to learn to swim for the last 4 years but I failed), but that does not affect my love for beaches. I enjoy the sun, the sand, the waves and of course the seafood. Here are some pictures of the seafood.

They were all very fresh and the taste was amazing.

As mentioned before, I enjoy going to the beaches not only because of food. It is also because of the scenery and basically everything there that captivate me. Additionally, it is kind of a tradition of my family to go on a holiday with all of my relatives from my mom’s side. So it is very fun too as I get to see all of my cousins and spend time with them. Here are some photos of last year trip

My High School

If you ask me what has been the proudest moment of my life so far, I will say it was when I found out I got into my high school.

My high school is Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted- school to two former presidents of my country. It is one of the oldest schools in my city so it is very beautiful in a classic way. Here is a corner of the school! It may look quite simple because they have not done anything to it since 1928 (only repaint it).

It had always been my dream school since I started to work to get into high school. In order to gain a place at the school, you will need to have been specialized in at least one subject and you have to be very passionate about that subject. For me, it was English. I started to take things seriously in the summer of grade 8 to grade 9. I remembered studying everyday in the summer heat and it was just so fierce. However, you also have to be good at Maths, Vietnamese, and the normal English. I found Maths quite difficult than the other three. When I did the exam, I had a terrible mistake in Maths leading to 8,5 out of 10 and I thought I would failed. Nevertheless, the other two was good enough to gain me a place.

It was quite sad because I could not get into the class that specialized in English. It was 1000 applicants for 46 places and the English of the students from that class was amazing. I got into the normal class of the school. Here is another view of the school!

It was very hard to decide to study abroad because it just meant that I gave up on everything I worked for. However, now I think studying abroad is a wise choice as I don’t think I can compete against my classmates to get into a high- ranked Vietnamese university. Basically, I am certain that I’m not as smart as my classmates from my high school 😀

Anyway, it was my proudest achievment so far. I’m hoping to have some more memories that I can be proud of.

Foundation Experience

Choosing to study abroad was a surprise to my parents and friends. Nobody thought that I would decide to study in another country. Personally, I cannot understand myself either. Perhaps it was because I was totally in love with the UK when I went on summer camp. I was mostly attracted to Brighton as I thought it was a vibrant city with a lot of things to offer. I did some research and finally decided to choose Bellerbys as my new school. Bellerbys College is located in 4 different cities in the UK: Cambridge, Brighton, London and Oxford. Having mentioned that I really like Brighton, I chose Brighton campus. After that, I have to decide on which course to study. I chose Business Foundation because it was the most suitable one for me.

Business Foundation is the course designed for students who wish to proceed into Business related degrees at University. Therefore, the course consists of Business Maths, Accounts, Economics, Business Studies, Foundation English Skills and CIT. All of the subjects are designed to equip students with the relevant knowledge required in University. Hence, this course will help students have a strong foundation for University.

Information on Business Foundation

As regards to Business Math, we have a chance to study many interesting topics such as differentiation, statistics. These subjects have enhanced my knowledge in Math. I now understand how to calculate standard derivation, mean. This will be very helpful for me as I will study Finance in University. On the other hand, Accounts was a whole new subject to me as I had never learnt it before. I found it very difficult to understand at first. I could not get used to the Balance Sheet and the Income Statement. However, with my teacher’s help, I managed to get better in the subject. I understand all the key concepts and know how to apply them into real life.

Turning to Economics which was another completely new subject to me, I had a chance to learn many new things. This subject is my favourite subject. I was very interested in the basic economic problem, supply and demand, price elasticity. Although at first I found some terms difficult to understand, I still like this subject. On the other side, Business Studies is somehow linked to Economics. Thus, the subject became very clear to understand when you know the economic concepts well. Nevertheless, Business Studies required us to know the basic concepts of finances so it was a bit challenging.

With respect to Foundation English Skills, this subject was the only subject we had to learn throughout the school year. We learnt synthesis, taking notes, listening and reading skills. These are all essential skills for University because we are international students. Learning English also helped us understand other subjects better. For CIT, we learnt many things such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Words and Blogs. It is very useful to have CIT as a core module in Business Foundation as most of the business courses require students knowing the basics of information technology. Although the knowledge we gained from Foundation’s CIT is pretty simple, I believe it will help me build a strong foundation for University.

Regarding the social aspect, I have made many new friends. Foundation is different from A-level, we had to study as a class so we got chances to meet our classmates every period. Therefore, we have formed a very strong relationship. Most of my friends from S_BUS_C are Chinese. They are all very friendly and cheerful. I really like being around them. They are also very smart and hard-working which gave me motivation to work harder. Generally, I really enjoy being a student of S_BUS_C class.

Getting into a good University is an ultimate dream of almost every student. To get in to a British university, pupils often choose to do A-levels. However, after 2 terms of A-levels, I found out that it was not suitable for me and in fact doing A-levels was my parents’ choices not mine. I had to persuade my parents to let me change to Foundation. I study Business Foundation as I want to study Accounting and Management in University. The business foundation course consists of six main subjects: Economics, Business Studies, Accounts, CIT, Maths and English. Although I have learned English before, English taught in Foundation is a whole different thing. We have to do coursework a lot, and there was only one proper Exam in term 1. So the English marks are mainly based on coursework.

Initially, I wanted to study Business Foundation because I thought it would be better to study something that was close to the university’s curriculum. As being an international student, I think University would be harder if you did not know the core concepts. On the other hand, I am not very keen on doing English coursework. There is a lot of coursework need to be done and it can be very stressful when I had to do coursework and other subject’s test at the same time.

There are many pathways to help one gain a place at university.  One of those pathways is a Foundation course. At Bellerbys College, foundation’s final marks not only consist of exam marks but also coursework marks.

Coursework can be considered as an exam because it accounts for roughly 10% or more of final mark. However, as students can prepare for the coursework at home, some may regard coursework as a piece of homework. Nevertheless, each subject has different way to assess coursework mark.

CIT marks are all from coursework so for CIT, coursework marks are very important. Though, CIT’s coursework can be done at home, students also need to put great effort to get the highest possible mark in order to boost their grades up. On the other hand, for other subjects such as Economics and Business, coursework only accounts for 10% of the final mark. Therefore, the coursework for these subjects are different. The coursework will usually be an essay which will be written in class. Additionally, students have chance to prepare for their notes and essay at home such as finding the correct information or data so the task is much easier. English also has coursework but there are various types of coursework a student has to complete such as listening, taking notes, debating. Sometimes, students are overloaded with the coursework.
